More than 117,000 cell phones are stolen each month in Venezuela
El Universal: According to figures provided by mobile phone operators, the number of calls they receive from all over the country to suspend phone lines following theft of mobile phones averages 117,100 a month. This number does not include the automatic procedure performed when customer service is not operating, said a source.
The number of mobile phones in Venezuela amounts to 27,501,000, and about 5 million of them are smart phones. Although mobile operators did not want to report what percentage of phones with advanced capabilities are reported as stolen each month, a source said that in the last two months, those reports are related to mobile lines of devices such as iPhone, BlackBerry and Nokia.
Police sources said that the bulk of cell phones thefts occur on highways and in the restrooms of major malls.
