United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) primary elections underway
VHeadline News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue reports: Elections are underway to choose delegates to attend the extraordinary Congress of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
According to party organizer of the elections, Libertador Mayor, Jorge Rodriguez, 80% of the voting tables were up and running by seven o'clock this morning.
The exercise in primary elections is the first of its kind in Venezuela and is organized and monitored by the National Elections Council (CNE) to ensure transparency and efficiency.
All party leaders who have appeared on television have been sending the same message to party members: come and vote and making it easy for them to find out where exactly they are going to vote.

According to official statistics, there are 5,721,562 members of the party but only 2,973,495 (51%) members will vote.
Foreign Minister and PSUV vice president for the south-eastern region, Nicolas Maduro said the primaries are another exercise in democracy and the idea of the elections and the congress is to build a vanguard of Socialism in Venezuela.
People voting today, he continued, are the organized patrols, which will elect delegates to the all-important Congress which starts next week where discussions and debates will center on the road to follow and the next stage of building 21st-century Socialism.
