INTI pays Spanish ex-pats to recover Afro-Venezuelan lands in Yaracuy
VHeadline.com News Editor Patrick J. O'Donoghue writes: Spanish landowning ex-pats in Yaracuy State have signed an agreement with Venezuela's National Lands Institute (INTI) .
Owners of the following Yaracuy farms: Miranda, La Gonzalera, Agua Blanca, El Trece Hacienda, Macagua, La Margarita, Zoila, Churreru, Majagual, Santa Marta, San Borondon and San Borondon I will be paid a total 6.8 billion bolivares as compensation.
- INTI president, Richard Vivas says 12 Spanish born and Spanish descendents owning 1,154 hectares between them will receive payment within 20 days.
The agreement ends a year of violence and invasions and hours of negotiations between INTI and the Spanish Embassy to seek a solution.
Vivas says the lands belong to African Americans who fought the colonial system in 1732. "200 years later, General Juan Vicente Gomez handed the lands, comprising 20,400 hectares over to a society (of African Americans) ... that is what we are recovering."
The lands do not belong to the Spanish producers and the compensation is payment for assets, such as buildings, plantations and roads, as well as shares acquired by some producers.
Spanish Ambassador, Raul Morodo calls the agreement satisfactory, given the difficult legal and historical background.
The Spanish producers are also happy that things are over and have yet to decide whether to return to Spain or stay in Venezuela.
