Venezuela's INTI declares idle half of Nuare landed estate in Yaracuy
The Venezuelan Lands Institute (INTI) has intervened the Nuare hacienda in Yaracuy. INTI president, Richard Vivas has declared 1,232 of 2,500 hectares idle and unproductive.
Vivas has visited the area and confirmed that the current conflict between peasants and supposed owner, Abelardo Riera will be solved via the Chaz Method, namely an agreement to allow the supposed owner to continue on the productive part of the farm and peasants or cooperatives to start producing on idle lands.
INTI and Yaracuy State officials are currently inspecting the property and will attempt to trace legal ownership of the farm.
At an assembly of the Robyzam integral cooperative, Vivas has succeeded in getting peasants to respect productive activity on the landed estate, while the assessment lasts.
"The Riera family is currently in sugarcane harvest and is raising cattle which we will review in detail and one possible proposal will be to acquire the livestock to set up an agro-productive project."
Vivas insists that the INTI should have an answer within two weeks and warns that if the farm is deemed private property, then it must be recognized and the owner compensated.
"If it proves to be State property, then we reserve the right to pay for improvements and assets ... our priority is to get a speedy answer."
At the moment, peasant groups are squatting on part of the idle lands under National Guard (GN) protection to avoid incidents.
