Columnist patronizes poor ol' Danny Glover using religious pilgrimage as racial front
Political analyst and columnist, Carolina Jaimes Branger says it's a pity that African-American US actor Danny Glover didn't stay long enough in Venezuela to attend the annual pilgrimage in Barquisimeto of Our Lady, The Divina Pastora where she insists he would have seen for himself that there is no racism in Venezuela.
"The procession is not only the biggest demonstration of faith in Latin America but it is also the most open demonstration of equality among Venezuelans ... it's a pity that Danny Glover, who came to Venezuela to find out for himself I- don't-know- want- what- kind of racial discrimination didn't attend ... he would have loved it."
Jaimes Branger says it's an event where rich and poor, black and white, Christians and atheists (?) come together. As one critic snaps: wow, something like Brazil's Carnival or Guadalupe' procession in Mexico ... "the majority are poor and colored people, who welcome Creoles ands whites ... Mrs. Jaimes Branger has forgotten that relevant fact ... if it was a party in the rich area of Barquisimeto, then the same people encountered in the procession would definitely not be welcome."
In a Venezuelan manner, Jaimes Branger patronizes with the pat comment, "here in Venezuela we cannot understand that such a situation exists in other parts of the world .... here we are like our coffee from weak to strong ... guayoyo, marroncito and with milk ... in Venezuela, we have many problems but thank God, racism isn't and never will be one of them, even though some people may want to see the contrary."
Yes, and just a personal commentary ... Danny Glover should visit Venezuela again and see the Divina Pastora procession for himself and the Dancing Devils and St. John The Baptist Drum Festivals to see who welcomes who.
